Welcome to the Garrick Club Online Database for the Works of Art Collections.

It is hoped that these instructions may be found useful by some users. More detailed information explaining catalogue numbers and abbreviations used can be found by going to ABOUT THE CATALOGUE on the front search page. The attention of all users is also drawn to the NOTICE OF COPYRIGHT AND LIABILITY.

If you experience any problems with the database please consult the following instructions in the first instance. If you are still experiencing problems please contact the Librarian.

Three types of searches are possible: by specific categories, i.e. by sitter or artist; by catalogue number; or an advanced search, where any number of criteria may be specified.

Searches by category

It is possible to search by category, either for artist, sitter, character or play. For members who are signed in using their personal passwords it is also possible to search by room by selecting the required room from a list.

Once a category search has been selected by clicking on Search by Artist, or Search by Sitter etc., a new page will open, and two text search boxes will appear. The upper box allows for a selection to be made using a pull down list and scrolling to your selection [typing the first letter jumps to that part of the list]. Once the selection is made click on the Search button or press return. This will bring up a list of all results for that search. Alternatively the second box can be used for a free text search. This is useful if you are unsure of the full spelling, or are looking for a name that may refer to more than one person [ie. Kemble]. On pressing Search or return, this will bring up a selection of results from which it is then possible to refine the search. Clicking on a given name will provide a list of all results for that search [just as if you had made your selection from the pull down list].

It is now possible to print this list by clicking on Print Results and following the on-screen prompt.

Alternatively, clicking on more info [next to each catalogue number] will provide the full record for each object. Selecting Print Report and following the on-screen prompt will print out the chosen record in full. Alternatively selecting Print Image will print a larger image with caption.

Clicking on New Search will always return you to the front search page. Alternatively, navigate backwards and forwards using your browser controls. You will also notice that the search boxes originally selected remain at the top of the page allowing a new search by the same category to be made without having to return to the front search page.

Searches by Catalogue number

If you know the catalogue number of the work of art you are looking for, you can use Search by Catalogue Number to go straight to that entry. As with the previous searches there are two search text boxes, one with a pull down list, the other with a free search. These work in exactly the same way as the Searches by Category, and the results for each entry can be printed in exactly the same way by selecting either Print Report or Print Image.

Clicking on New Search will always return you to the front search page. Alternatively navigate backwards and forwards using your browsers controls. You will also notice that the search boxes originally selected remain at the top allowing a new search by Catalogue number to be made without having to return to the front search page.

Advanced Search

This enables more refined searches to be conducted, and is particularly useful when searching names such as "Garrick" or "de Wilde", which due to the nature of the collection provide large sets of results. It is possible to search combined data fields in order to narrow the results. "Category" and "Technique" are chosen from pull down fields, but all the other fields are free text searches. Please enter as much or as little text in your selected fields and press Advanced Search or return. Clicking on Reset will clear the form. The results are presented in catalogue number order, and the full record for each entry can be accessed by selecting more info [next to each catalogue number].

Clicking on New Search will always return you to the front search page. Alternatively navigate backwards and forwards using your browsers controls.
